Showing Love

Henry David Thoreau is one of my favorite people in terms of his writing and how he approaches life. He would definitely be considered a humanist. One of his quotes came to mind when talking to one of my students.

"Live your beliefs and you can turn the world around." - Henry David Thoreau

It is hard to be who you are and to live in accordance with your own beliefs. People who pretend that its not hard, in my opinion, do not check in with themselves in an honest way. I mean if we have strong values and beliefs we have to live them whether they give us glory, give us credit, and sometimes you start thinking that the people who do not hold themselves to the same standard get more. We might become jealous, tired, angry, and due to being human we will have bad days. This is why it is important we self-assess through honest reflection, we forgive ourselves, and then we try to correct our mistakes. It is through this that allows us to be good role models for others which can have an impact on other people. You can change something by just being who you are. I truly believe that.

We need all kinds of people. We need optimists, we need pragmatics, and we also need pessimists. They all have a part to play. Some people dim their own natures due to being criticized, ridiculed, or jaded. But if everyone could embrace their strengths this world would be a better place. We need to embrace the light we all have and we all have something. Finding it and maintaining it is where it gets hard.

Another aspect to help our immediate world is to practice acts of gratitude and love. Kindness just like everything is a habit. We must be intentional about our kindness and make sure we proactively display our love for the people in our lives. So think how you can show the people in your lives that they are adored.

Helping them with a task, checking in on them, bringing them something to help with a bad day, being there, providing a distraction, stating it outright, and making someone feel like you are there to lighten the load not add to it. I hope the people in my life feel I am someone who helps rather than adds. If I'm the latter let me know.

Because just like Ed Sheeran said "humans are destined to radiate or drain." Meaning some people live in accordance with their beliefs and show their love which is contagious to the people around them or they don't which leads to taking too much which creates bad feelings in the people around you.
